SHOPPING/ Clothing
NYC is a mecca for great deals, especially for my
European guests (I've SEEN the price of Levi's in
London!). Here are some great places for
discount, but good quality clothing:
Century 21 - The legendary store!
22 Cortlandt Street (NOTE: The Cortandt St. stop
on the subway is closed due to construction at
the WTC site)
Phone: 212-227-9093

Shopping/ Electronics & cameras
You can get some good deals here in NYC.
Be warned: NONE of the places near Times
Square are any good!
The 'camera district' is located on West 32nd
Street between 6th and 7th Avenue.
Best Buy - 4 locations
60 W 23rd St
Phone: 212-366-1373
Circuit City - 3 locations
2232 Broadway
Tel: (212) 362-9850
J & R - High quality sales staff
23 Park Row
(212) 238-9000
Shopping/ Outlet Mall
There's one major outlet mall
near NYC. It's located in New
Jersey and the great advantage
of that is there's no sales tax on
clothing.
To get here, catch the #129 bus
from Port Authority Bus Terminal
(located at 42nd Street & 8th
Avenue).
Harmon Cove
Unusual places to visit:
Coney Island in the Summer -
great old roller coaster
Brighton Beach - Russian area
and great food
Arthur Avenue - TRUE Italian
area in the Bronx, not the
tourist trap like Little Italy
The Cloisters. Way uptown,
but so peaceful and serene.
Great views of the Hudson
River
Tips on TIPPING:
It's a fact - you gotta tip. Waiters and taxis
especially. 15-20% is customary. One hint:
double the tax on your restaurant bill to
figure the tip. Add a little extra if they were
really good.
For taxis, add a dollar or two over the fare,
or 20%. They make very little money.
MTA (subways/buses/trains)
There's no way I can begin to outline all New York has to offer on this single page . What I will try
to do is give you a few unusual places to go and included on the page are some useful links
and phone numbers to help you navigate the city. This page will continue to expand as I get the
time.
A couple of basics: Numbered streets run east/west and Avenues run north/south. The higher
the street number, the further north you're going and vice versa. 5th Avenue is the east/west
divider.
The nearest subway lines to me are the 1,2,3,N, R, W, 7, S which you can catch at the Times
Square station - 42nd Street & 7th Avenue. There's also the E,A,C lines, which you can catch at
42nd Street & 8th Avenue. See the How to Get Here link for directions to my place from the
airport.
